Why we built it
Most people who want support don't get it in time. Therapy has waitlists, costs, and — for many — stigma. Meditation apps tend to gamify calm and hand you the same pre-recorded audio whether you're mildly annoyed or mid-panic. Crisis lines are the right tool for crises, but not for a bad Tuesday. There's a gap, and for a lot of people it's where most of their distress lives.
We wanted something simpler: a companion you could open at 2 AM and talk to like a thoughtful friend — one who happens to know a lot about how the nervous system actually works, and who will sit with you for two minutes without trying to fix you.
What Chilled actually does
You open the chat and describe what's going on. Chilled listens first, asks before it suggests, and — if you want — guides you through a short practice in real time. Box breathing, a body scan, physiological sighs, 5-4-3-2-1 grounding, a gentle reframe. The exercises are drawn from cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness research, and contemporary neuroscience of breath and vagal tone. They're well-studied and they work for most people in most moments.
When a session feels done, you end it, and Chilled writes you a short recap — like a therapist might at the end of an hour. The recap surfaces the next time you come back, so the conversation keeps a thread.
What Chilled is not
- Not a therapist. It cannot assess, diagnose, or treat a mental-health condition. If what you're carrying is bigger than a rough day, please see a human clinician.
- Not a doctor. It does not give medication advice and will not speculate about symptoms. Acute physical symptoms (chest pain, severe dissociation, can't breathe) warrant a call to your doctor or a crisis line.
- Not a crisis service. If you're in crisis, Chilled will pause the conversation and point you at human support lines. That's a feature, not a failure.
- Not a replacement for sleep, movement, sunlight, and human connection. Those are the foundations. Chilled is a supplement.
How we think about safety
Every message you send is checked — in parallel, never blocking the main reply — by a small safety classifier. If it flags self-harm, suicidal ideation, abuse, or an acute medical pattern, the normal wellness response is replaced with crisis resources (988 in the US, Crisis Text Line, findahelpline.com internationally). We log those events so we can audit our accuracy, but no one at Chilled is reading your chat. See the Privacy Policy for specifics.
How it's built
Chilled runs on Anthropic's Claude, a frontier large language model. The classifier uses a faster sibling model (Haiku) tuned with a strict safety prompt. Your conversations are stored on Supabase (SOC 2 Type II) with row-level security — only you can read your own data. Nothing you say is used to train AI models. You can delete your account and all its data at any time from the settings page.
Our principles
- Honesty over hype.We won't claim Chilled cures anxiety. It doesn't, and the research wouldn't support the claim.
- Calm over engagement. We don't want you using Chilled more. We want you reaching for it when you need it, and leaving quickly when you don't.
- Evidence over vibes.Every technique is chosen because it's well-studied in peer-reviewed literature — not because it sounds nice.
- Privacy without asterisks. No training on your data. No selling your data. One-click deletion. Full stop.
Who we are
Chilled is a small team building quietly. If you want to reach us — a bug, a suggestion, a concern about a response you got — email hello@chilled.ai. A human reads every message.
